Abendland
A film poem about a continent at night, a culture that is at once dawning and highly tense, an "Occident" that sees itself - often somewhat self-obsessed - as the pinnacle of human civilization and at the same time proliferates very pragmatically as a service society: Nikolaus Geyrhalter looks around at a paradise where protecting is understood in very different ways. Night work versus oblivious evening distraction, birth and death, questions awaiting answers in the half-light, confusion of languages, news routines and political negotiations - all this captured in images of great detail.
"About the fortress of Europe one reads and one knows, but when one has actually seen it, one feels differently." NIKOLAUS GEYRHALTER
