Anatol
Premiere at the Akademietheater on June 11, 1960. Recording from the Akademietheater in 1961
Anatol—Schnitzler’s Viennese take on Casanova and Don Juan: a seducer who always hopes to be seduced himself. He is both winner and loser in the charming game of love roulette, and addicted to the game itself. For every victory—every conquest—fuels his hope of hitting the jackpot: true, one-and-only love. Robert Lindner, an elegant charmer and philosophical dandy, plays “Anatol,” with Wolf Albach-Retty at his side as the ironically cheerful “Max.” And with Käthe Gold, Christiane Hörbiger, Paula Wessely, Johanna Matz, and Blanche Aubry, a top-notch ensemble of actresses is assembled who, with a wink, let the notorious seducer believe in his victories: for Cora, Berta, Ilona, and all the others hold firmly in their own hands the strings that Anatol thinks he is pulling.
