Julius Kraus, a shoemaker, lives a secluded life on the outskirts of a Bavarian village. He becomes increasingly caught up in the maelstrom of dramatic political events between 1918 and Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, until an inheritance from the United States and the revelation of his Jewish identity prove to be his undoing.
