Casanova Variations

Mozart meets Malkovich meets Casanova. And since no one can embody the legendary Venetian Casanova as naturally as he can, he is also in front of the camera for the film as the leading actor: John Malkovich. He is supported by Veronica Ferres as Elisa and top-class singers: the baritone Florian Boesch as the singing Casanova, Anna Prohaska as Caterina, Miah Persson as Elisa II and the multi-award-winning, world-famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Count Branicki. In 2014 we experience with the visitors of an old theater, in the south of Europe, the performance of an opera conceived after Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte about the famous bon vivant and lover Giacomo Casanova. John Malkovich heads an ensemble of actors and singers. The opera and the real life of the artistic troupe intertwine. In parallel, in a Bohemian chateau, we witness Casanova's last encounter with a woman, the poet Elisa van der Recke, whose visit brings him violently back to life in many ways. Elisa's interest turns to Casanova's memoirs, thousands of pages long, and he realizes that in his attempt to seduce a woman once again, they could serve as the final ace up his sleeve....
