Rupert Kramer, 35 years old, called Ratz, is actually an apolitical person, a political refusenik, the son of a social democratic minister who wants nothing to do with all his father's business dealings and hates him abysmally. While high, he spends nights in front of the computer developing abstruse computer games, especially a game to destroy his father. And of all things, he gets caught up in a brutal historical course that he can't avoid. For Ratz receives a mysterious phone call from Mimi, his childhood sweetheart. She is the niece of a Lithuanian Nazi responsible for the murder of countless Jews. Ratz flies to America, not knowing what to expect. It soon becomes clear: he is to help expand the old Nazi's hiding place. For 32 years, the old man has been hiding in the basement of an inconspicuous house on Long Island. There Ratz meets him. The stories and fates of three families and generations fall on Ratz's head and he is suddenly confronted, without meaning to, with the repulsiveness of the 20th century.
