Raimund’s famous magical fairy tale about the wealthy Lord von Flottwell, who confuses extravagance with the joy of life and wealth with happiness, falls prey to false friends and treacherous servants until he loses everything and is ultimately reduced to relying on the alms he himself once distributed, as well as on the help of those he mistreated in his former blindness. But the good fairy Cheristane watches over it all—she guides Flottwell’s redemption to a happy ending.
