Shimmering heat, mighty sand dunes, from afar a caravan. Familiar images and yet very different - because this caravan consists exclusively of women. Among the Toubou, a nomadic tribe in the southeast of the Sahara, it has always been the women's custom to set out on a 1,500-kilometer journey once a year. The women cross the desert with children and many camels to harvest dates in the oases in northern Niger and sell them in the south. The journey is arduous, but a possible stray, lack of water, the birth of a child on the way or the long absence do not deter the women. Only the result counts: Thanks to their earnings, a nomadic household can live for a year without having to sell animals. If Domagali, the leader of the caravan, believes that the journey should be undertaken in the future, it offers a completely different incentive for Amina and Mariama, who dream of a modern life. Far from their husbands, they - nomadic women among themselves - share their secrets.
