DIE PAPIERENE BRÜCKE is the central part of a film trilogy in which the director deals with Jewish identity. It is Ruth Beckermann's journey through her own family history, with which she simultaneously tells the story of Central European Jews and the history of a region. The examination of family history is abruptly interrupted by snapshots in the streets of Vienna, where anti-Semitism is outspoken. But feelings about Vienna are ambivalent; coming back is not the end of the quest. "This film tries, as it were, to bring individual fates back out of this compulsion to de-individualize."
