Austria at the beginning of the 1990s: Jörg Haider and his supporters are roaming the countryside, always ready to convert discontent and fear of crisis into votes. Their appearance is dynamic and accustomed to victory; their slogans are striking and the blame is unambiguous. Foreigners are blamed for crime, unemployment, "social parasites" and foreign infiltration, while the "old parties" are blamed for the privilege economy and the economic crisis. Disadvantaged people and those who have lost their way are looking for the culprits for their misery; minimum pensioners who fear for the little they have; old Nazis who mourn the Third Reich; young right-wing radicals who dream of dying for their homeland and small party functionaries who feel taken seriously for the first time in their lives through their office. This is an attempt to get to the bottom of the FPÖ phenomenon.
