In 1985, Austrian politician Friedhelm Frischenschlager caused a scandal by receiving former SS officer and war criminal Walter Reder at the airport in Vienna when he returned after serving a long prison sentence in Italy. Reder was the key figure in connection with a series of massacres perpetrated by German troops on the civilian population during their retreat through northern Italy in 1944. One of the members in Reder's SS formation was Olaf Jürgenssen, who served as a medic. Along the way, he took numerous photographic images, individual prints of which were kept in an iron cassette, the negatives of which were found by his grandson Nils Olger in his estate. The filmmaker takes this family heritage as the occasion for a journey in the footsteps of his grandfather.
