Einen Jux will er sich machen
Premiere at the Burgtheater on June 20, 1956.
One of Johann Nestroy’s most popular farces, directed by Leopold Lindtberg—one of the Burgtheater’s most prominent Nestroy directors—with a legendary cast: Josef Meinrad as Weinberl and Inge Konradi as Christopherl on their way from the gloomy cellar to the glittering city, where the staid merchant’s clerk Weinberl finally wants to be “a damn fine guy” for once, and the apprentice Christopherl, at his side, hopes to learn a thing or two about the big wide world. At first, their sense of propriety still seems to stand in the way of their journey into adventure, but since their cash on hand is nowhere near enough for the scale of their endeavor, they find themselves in the most turbulent encounters sooner than they’d like—demanding encounters with ladies, being mistaken for a fleeing couple in love, and, last but not least, their employer, who is in town on a romantic errand and, of course, must not find out that his employees have left the business unattended. But when Weinberl and Christopherl return, exhausted and cured of all their thirst for adventure, they catch a thief in the act and, with death-defying courage, prevent a break-in at the Comptoir—thus proving themselves, after all, to be two rather “damned fine fellows.”
