Tales from the Vienna Woods
The film adaptation of Ödön von Horvath's play about petit-bourgeois disasters: The "dear, sweet" girl Marianne
(Birgit Doll), daughter of the so-called Magic King (Helmut Qualtinger) is engaged to the stuffy butcher Oskar (Götz Kauffmann). She runs away from him because she falls in love with the philanderer and womanizer Alfred (Hanno Pöschl), who in turn later abandons her with their son Leopold. Since her father has disowned Marianne, she has to perform in revealing numbers at the nightclub "Maxim", where she is seen by her father and former friends, who ultimately force a "good ending", which, however, means resignation and collapse for Marianne.
"Nothing gives as much a feeling of infinity as stupidity." ÖDÖN VON HORVATH
