Claus Peymann’s production of Schiller’s drama about oppression, rebellion, and human rights is less a fiery political call to action than a subtle exploration of human behavior within a social conflict. With Gert Voss as Gessler, power and cruelty possess nothing demonic; the despot is all too human—and therefore all the more dangerous. Josef Bierbichler’s Tell is unique: neither a freedom fighter nor a political agitator, but a man who simply wishes to be left in peace—and who, at the decisive moment, does what must be done.
