A series of short films and fragments from the work of Austrian film pioneers between 1908 and 1918 are gathered here around the completely preserved crime thriller FRAUENEHRE by Georg Kundert: A frivolous piece like DAS EITLE STUBENMÄDCHEN shows that early cinema was more permissive than is often assumed; a melodrama like DIE ZIRKUSGRÄFIN demonstrates the ideas of exoticism that existed during these years; the cheerful propaganda film WIEN IM KRIEG makes the First World War bearable, especially for the "modern Weanamadeln"; and the Anzengruber adaptation EIN DOPPELSELBSTMORD searches for ways out of patriarchal entrenchment. For this compilation, Florian C. Reithner has created a new soundtrack full of contemporary references.

"Homegrown film pioneers worked in no small part toward a loosening of mores that certainly didn't hurt Austria." BERT REBHANDL
