"The only thing that weighs on my conscience is the horoscope." The publisher and editor-in-chief of the Kronen Zeitung, Hans Dichand, is not so keen on the stars: "I don't believe in them." But he says it's important to be close to readers, sometimes even a nose ahead. It is the distanced view from the outside that helps the film to gain insights into the everyday life of the editorial team, and allows a degree of self-portrayal by those portrayed: CITIZEN KRONE is a journey through the departments, presenting in the best direct cinema manner how unabashedly this newspaper elevates politics to the level of a spectacle. Free of polemics, the Belgian Nathalie Borgers and her team explore the Krone system: a newspaper as friend, advisor, ombudsman for the "little people" and not least as "a prism through which the success of populism in this country can be understood". As one audience member put it following the premiere, "If the whole thing wasn't so sad, it would actually be insanely funny!"
"You couldn't have made a different film at all - you are so from another world." Hans Dichand to Nathalie Borgers
