LOVE IT WAS NOT is a tragic love story between a prisoner and her captor. Extravagant and full of vital energy, Helena Citron is brought to Auschwitz as a young woman. She soon finds solace with Franz Wunsch, a high-ranking SS officer who falls in love with Helena and her beautiful singing voice. Despite the risk of execution if discovered, the relationship lasted until the liberation of Auschwitz. However, when a letter arrives 30 years later from Wunsch's wife asking Helena to testify in Wunsch's favor, she is faced with an impossible decision: Will she help the man who brutally dealt with so many lives but saved hers and those close to her?
"Israel's 2020 Oscar submission is undoubtedly one of the films of the year: unusual and challenging, compelling and courageous, Maya Sarfaty tells of a love that should not have existed, and yet did." FILM PLUS KRITIK
