Burgtheater premiere at the Theater an der Wien on February 14, 1963. Recording from the Burgtheater, 1963

Molnár’s famous suburban legend about the hapless carnival worker Liliom (Josef Meinrad), who plunges Julie (Inge Konradi)—who loves him unreservedly—into poverty and misery —the charmer adored by women fails as a family man, becomes cold and heartless out of despair, and, driven by financial hardship, goes astray. But the robbery, intended to bring in quick cash, goes awry, and Liliom commits suicide. In the afterlife, he must answer for his deeds before the Lord (Hans Moser in one of his few roles at the Burgtheater), only to return to Earth once more—for a single day… Starring: Lilly Karoly, Inge Konradi, Lotte Ledl, Susi Nicoletti, Monika Weiss, Viktor Braun, Gandolf Buschbeck, Richard Eybner, Hintz Fabricius, Wolfgang Hebenstreith, Manfred Inger, Michael Janisch, Otto Kerry, Tom Krinzinger, Josef Meinrad, Karl Mittner, Hans Moser, Johannes Neuhauser, Hannes Schiel, Otto Schmöle, Reinhold Siegert, Stefan Skodler, Michael Tellering.
