Marko Feingold, born in 1913, grew up in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district. After an apprenticeship, he toured Italy as a salesman with his brother Ernst. In 1938, he was arrested by the Nazis during a stay in Vienna shortly after the annexation of Austria. He survived the Auschwitz, Neuengamme, Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps, where he was interned until liberation in 1945. After the war, he became an escape helper for tens of thousands of former concentration camp prisoners, smuggling them from Austria across the Alps to Italy and on to Palestine. He is the oldest Jew in Austria, President of the Jewish Community of the City of Salzburg and describes himself as not particularly religious.
