Vienna, 1938: The Jewish gallerist's son Victor Kaufmann, the worker Rudi and Victor's girlfriend Lena are inseparable. Only secretly Rudi envies his friend's wife and finances. One day Rudi trades in his worker's uniform for an SS uniform and reveals an explosive secret to his Nazi buddies: the Kaufmanns own a real Michelangelo! What Rudi doesn't know - there are also two fakes in circulation. Rudi confiscates what he believes to be the original, sends the Kaufmanns to the concentration camp and gets engaged to Lena. But just as the Michelangelo is to be given to the Duce, the secret is discovered. Rudi collects Victor in the concentration camp - he is supposed to take him to Berlin to the somewhat different interrogation methods. When the plane crashes and Rudi lies injured on the ground, Victor grabs Rudi's uniform. With their roles reversed, they now head to the command center, but Lena is also on her way there to visit her fiancé...
