From the proclamation of the First Republic to the burning of the Palace of Justice to the Civil War, plus images of May Day celebrations, sports festivals and the construction of socialist, "Red" Vienna: this DVD brings together a selection of thirteen feature films, documentaries and newsreels from those fateful years 1913 to 1934. They provide exciting, surprising and sometimes almost seemingly unreal insights into an everyday culture and life reality that dates back almost 100 years. These reports from the past are documents of political struggle and social upheaval and reconstruction, or more precisely: proletarian cinema, which serves both to enlighten the working class and to represent it, and which stands in opposition to bourgeois film and its commercial orientation.
