With over 90 works to her name, 87-year-old Renate Welsh is one of the most influential authors in Austrian children’s and young adult literature. The film “Renate” traces her eventful life—from her childhood marked by guilt to her literary work with Christine Nöstlinger and Mira Lobe on behalf of voiceless outsiders. In her writing workshops, she guides people who are unfamiliar with writing—such as homeless individuals or mountain farmers—to find their own voice. But a sudden stroke robs her of her own voice and mobility. A touching portrait of an extraordinary author who overcomes both her own and others’ speechlessness and has never stopped telling stories.
