Victor Dessauer, a Jew born in Vienna, witnesses as a child how his grandparents are brutally murdered by Nazi henchmen and his parents and sister are abducted. He recognizes the leader of the men, Kurt Gogl. 20 years later, Victor runs a textile business with his father Paul in Vienna and is in a relationship with the young Catholic Anna Stöger. Victor's life seems to be slowly moving towards a better future until his father learns that Kurt Gogl is supposedly living a carefree and blameless life in the Salzkammergut, where he works as a primary school principal. Paul commissions Simon Wiesenthal, now known as the “Nazi hunter”, to track down Gogl and bring him to justice. Gogl is indeed brought to trial, but is ultimately acquitted in Austria, which is still infested with Nazis. When Victor's father falls ill shortly afterwards as a result of the excitement surrounding the trial, Victor decides to take the law into his own hands, risking his own existence in the process.
