A youth in Vienna before the Anschluss, between soccer and girls. Herbert hoped to escape deportation, but was eventually taken with his father to Theresienstadt, where he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. After his deportation to Auschwitz, he escapes the death factory together with his father and arrives in a subcamp of Dachau, where his father finally succumbs to the hardships and the cold in the winter of 1944. He tells his grandson about his death march and liberation, about an adventurous journey to a destroyed Vienna and how he found his mother again. He talks about anti-semitism and hope. The conversation with his grandson is marked by humor as much as by touching moments.
