Richard Wadani's son emigrated to Australia over 40 years ago. He has therefore only seen his grandson twice, and the language barrier made conversations difficult even within the family circle. Thanks to simultaneous translation, the two can now talk directly to each other for the first time. Richard Wadani was born in Prague, but belonged to the Austrian ethnic group, and thus became German overnight after the Anschluss. The family has to leave Prague for Vienna, where Richard is drafted by the Wehrmacht and, as a driver behind the front, sees the suffering of the people in the Ukraine. Again and again he steals supplies from the Wehrmacht to distribute to the people. He is sentenced for this, but manages to escape punishment and ends up on the Western Front, from where he deserts to England. There he joins the Czech army. When the war is over, he finds his mother again in Vienna, but she is already at an age that she cannot and will not leave Vienna. Richard rises to the task, meets with hostility and disdain, and begins a fight for recognition and appreciation of deserters. His greatest success is the erection of the deserters' memorial in Vienna. With his grandson, a young man from the other side of the world sits opposite him, hearing many connections and details of his grandfather's life for the first time and asking exciting questions.
