Years have passed. Many in the village are now avowed Nazis; Silvan is a Sturmführer in the SA. And it is very inconvenient for him when Bertl, the man who raped his sister Elies, suddenly reappears and blackmails him. In the ensuing struggle, he kills Bertl. Peter, now a teenager who has befriended the communist Ludwig Allberger and embraced his political ideas, witnessed the manslaughter.
