Winfried (Peter Simonischek) is a 65-year-old, sensitive music teacher who lives with his old dog and has a fondness for jokes. His daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller), on the other hand, is the opposite: an ambitious management consultant, she travels the world from one project to the next, climbing the career ladder steeply. Father and daughter therefore don't get to see each other very often, but that suddenly changes when Winfried's dog dies and he then decides to pay Ines an unannounced visit at work in Bucharest. Because of his jokes and the subliminal criticism of her lifestyle, there is soon a clash between the two. And then Winfried turns into his alter ego Toni Erdmann: his teeth are crooked, his suit is ill-fitting and he has a wig on his head. The weird bird claims to be a personnel coach, gets Ines into some embarrassing situations in front of her colleagues - but the disguise also ensures that she and her father become closer ...
