The portrait ULRICH SEIDL: A DIRECTOR AT WORK shows the controversial Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl at work for the first time. The much-discussed "Seidl method" is made visible in a very direct way: the camera patiently looks over Seidl's shoulder during the shooting of the current feature film "IN THE BASEMENT" and observes him during the rehearsals for his latest, provocative theater production "Böse Buben/Fiese Männer" (Bad Boys/Nasty Men). In addition to extensive conversations and excerpts from earlier films, the film uses a richly relatable montage to create a picture of a fascinating, exceptional artist: it becomes clear how much Seidl's entire oeuvre is itself a quest, in which he is guided by the "real" as much as by his own visions and demons.
