Welcome in Vienna

WELCOME IN VIENNA is the third installment of the WOHIN UND ZURÜCK trilogy, based on a largely autobiographical screenplay by the Viennese writer, journalist, and filmmaker Georg Stefan Troller, who fled across Europe to escape the Nazis in 1938 and emigrated to the United States. He returned to Europe in 1949 and began working in radio. WELCOME IN VIENNA begins in the winter of 1944; the main protagonist, Freddy (Gabriel Barylli), is fighting as an American soldier in the final days of the war in Alsace. His return to Vienna after the war is overshadowed by the coldness with which Jewish emigrants are treated, by corruption, envy, and black-market dealings, and by the calculating tactics of the American military leadership, which promises former Nazi generals immunity from prosecution in exchange for military intelligence on the Red Army.
