WHAT HAPPINESS IS is about the adventures of two fortune seekers, a man and a woman. On behalf of the king of Bhutan, they travel the cities, valleys and mountains of the country to determine the well-being of the people. They interview peasants and monks, merchants and shamans, craftsmen, officials and princesses about their living conditions and their sense of happiness. In the process, the contradictions and cracks in a society that is just emerging from the Middle Ages into the 21st century come to light. However, "gross national happiness" as a yardstick and counter-image to the Western "gross national product" has long since found international resonance even in business circles.
