This film is what is commonly called a "coming-of-age film." Except that Charlie, the hero of the movie, so to speak, doesn't see old age coming. It catches him just as unprepared as his obesity or the requirement to find something like a real job. He enters the battle for a place in life with the handicap that overview, foresight and tactical thinking are just as few of his characteristics as verve, assertiveness and discipline.
