In 1938, shortly before Hitler's invasion of Austria, the young actress Carola Hell (Sunnyi Melles) is at the beginning of a brilliant career. She believes she can pursue her love for the Jewish writer Martin Hoffmann (Tobias Engel) in a non-political way. Therefore, the couple initially ignores the political changes in the country. But fascism doesn't give them a chance ... Based on the novel "Auch das war Wien" by Friedrich Torberg, director Wolfgang Glück ("Der Schüler Gerber") endeavored to come to terms with a suppressed chapter of German-Austrian history. "38" was nominated for an Oscar as best non-English language film.
