Karl Bockerer, a butcher in the Viennese suburbs, finds that the German Reich is also beginning to upset his life and his environment. His son has already succumbed to the fascination of shiny boots and beautiful uniforms. His wife is drawn to marches, one of his tarot partners has to leave Vienna head over heels, neighbors begin to denounce neighbors. The "Thousand Year Reich" also dominates the Viennese suburbs. But the Bockerer is an individualist, a maladjusted person with a sharp mind and a biting sense of humor. Mischievous and at the same time serious, calm and incredibly quick-witted, he begins passive resistance, and his weapon is mockery.
