"As a documentarist, I come across places and systems that I couldn't even imagine if I didn't find them." (Nikolaus Geyrhalter) The world along the Danube is essentially defined by two factors: the river and the often strange idiosyncrasies of the people who live along it. And you meet many there: fishermen and cemetery keepers, Buddhist monks, Danube Island allotment gardeners, stranded freighters, sanders and soldiers. In quiet images, an unobtrusive camera tells the story of the countless floaters buried in the Albern "Cemetery of the Nameless" as well as the story of the Romanian freighter who is stuck in Vienna with his wife on his tugboat because the Danube blockade in the former Yugoslavia is preventing his journey home. Nikolaus Geyrhalter's 1994 cinema debut Washed Up: "An unspectacular and, above all, non-intrusive documentary in which even well-worn clichés reveal new facets again."
