It is not uncommon for films to be claimed to provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of their protagonists. This often means a psychological or physical closeness. In the case of BEATRIX, intimacy is taken further, it is thought of to such an extent that one has to ask what intimacy actually is. BEATRIX shows a female body. It is the body of a young woman who spends some time alone in a house. That's all you get to know. She takes care of the house a bit, gets bored, makes phone calls and gets visitors. One thinks of the early films of Chantal Akerman and senses a similar strangeness in the private. It's about nothing less than the uncertain feeling of being alive. (PATRICK HOLZAPFEL)
