Johannes Leinert travels with his doctoral supervisor (Hanns Zischler) to a physics conference at the Hotel Esplanade in the Swiss Alps. An Iranian scientist is to give a groundbreaking lecture on quantum mechanics. But the speaker, who is expected to deliver nothing less than a theory of everything, is late and the high society passes the time with witty dinner parties and elegant ski trips. A mysterious pianist (Olivia Ross) casts a spell over Johannes, but something is wrong with her. She knows things about him that she can't possibly know. When one of the German physicists dies in a monstrous way, two investigators appear on the scene who suspect murder. While bizarre cloud formations appear in the sky, the pianist disappears without a trace and Johannes finds himself on the trail of a secret that has taken root deep beneath the mountain.
