Alfred Ninaus' film is based on a true incident. In February 1977, a thirteen-year-old boy was taken into custody by the police in Graz. The boy grew up in the Graz "slums" (meaning the last shantytowns in the Styrian capital Graz), has eleven siblings and was raised by his single mother. Martin Pittner, the main character of the film LAUF, HASE, LAUF, is also thirteen years old and grows up in a shanty town. Martin hardly finds anything wrong with committing minor burglaries and later even a robbery together with a friend - Fritz, who is the same age. He only realizes the seriousness of the situation when a detective confronts him.
