She Is the Other Gaze
Seeing can become an encounter through the gaze of others. Silent 16 mm sequences, in which the young artist Iris Dostal paints canvases white, create projection surfaces for the narration and work of an older generation. SHE IS THE OTHER GAZE is a collaboration with female artists active in the 1970s Viennese art scene and involved in the women's movement. The meeting point for the dialogue with Renate Bertlmann, Linda Christanell, Lore Heuermann, Karin Mack and Margot Pilz - all born between 1936 and 1943 - is the filmmaker's studio: an in-between-seeing in which thoughts are shared about self-determination in the artists' careers and resistance to the prevailing patriarchal social structures. The camera probes subtle forms as an intervening apparatus, transforming earlier works into cinematic images and setting them in motion.
