"WIENFILM 1896 - 1976" is a collective work, i.e. the most diverse contributions of Viennese artists, archive material and parts of his own films served the film publicist and filmmaker Ernst Schmidt jr. as raw material for the montage of an anthology about Vienna since the invention of film until today. The first Lumière films about Vienna are included as well as newsreels from the time before and after the annexation to the German Reich. This historical material is ironically commented on by a constant, abrupt change of scene or by an asynchronous image-text montage.... The film is nevertheless more than a mere collection of material about moving pictures from Vienna. Like Kurt Kren, Peter Kubelka and others, Ernst Schmidt jr. belongs to that group of Austrian filmmakers who were the first to consistently advance formal or structural film. Their most important works were made toward the middle of the 1960s." FERDINAND YOUNG
"An anthology, an entertaining picture book with confusing pagination. A collage as a virtuoso document of consciousness from the late seventies." KARL BARATTA
