Part 1: "Im Reich der Reblaus" - Austria in the mid-fifties. The seamstress Elfi Redlich and her two children are about to emigrate to America with the occupation officer Hal, when her husband, who has been missing for eleven years, returns home from Siberia. The factory owner Ulmendorff, on his way to the wedding of his niece Valerie, is deported to Russia due to an intrigue of his employee Hasak. Hasak's joy is short-lived, as the Jewish owner of the factory claims ownership.
